On September 20, 2023, Pope Francis addressed a message to the faithful at Saint Peter’s Square about Saint Daniel Comboni’s apostolic zeal. In his catechesis, the pope highlighted about Comboni’s passion for evangelization in Africa. Below is a shorter version of the text.
In his 2025 World Mission Day message, titled “Missionaries of Hope Among All Peoples,” Pope Francis urges every baptized Christian to be a “messenger and builder of hope.”
In forming future Comboni missionaries, we continuously instill in the young men’s hearts that being rooted in Christ through prayer, sacraments, faithfulness, personal holiness, and building relationship with others are essential to keep the flame of their vocation burning.
Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, at the age of 88. On Easter Sunday, up to the last moment of his life, in spite of his frail health, he wanted to manifest his deep love for people. He appeared in front of the tens of thousands of people present at Saint Peter’s Square, and in a weak voice, from his wheelchair at the balcony of Saint Peter’s Basilica, he said “Happy Easter.” The reaction of the people was one of great delight!

“They came to Him and saw where He was staying, and they remained with Him for a while; it was about the tenth hour. He said to them, ‘come and see,’” (John 1: 39, 41). Through God’s promptings, the “Come and See” Program was created for young men who care about their spiritual life; to deepen their desire to serve the Lord through the religious missionary vocation.
St. Daniel Comboni saw evangelization as inseparable from human transformation. His vision, echoed by Popes Paul VI and Francis, reminds us that true evangelization must uplift lives, educate minds, and shape moral character.
Habemus Papam! (We have a Pope!) This joyful proclamation was heard on May 8, 2025, from the City of Rome, announcing the election of Pope Leo XIV as the 267th successor of St. Peter.
