We have reached more than halfway through the Jubilee journey, a time of grace to renew, at the personal and community levels, the following of Jesus Christ and the service of our neighbor, especially the poorest and most abandoned.
This month, it is the turn of the very heart of the Jubilee: Forgiveness, primarily through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The forgiveness offered by God during the Holy Year, freely and unconditionally, is a source of new life and profound peace.
The motto “Pilgrims of Hope,” proposed by Pope Francis for the Jubilee, outlines for us the horizon we must reach: it is a journey that involves not only a change of place but also an inner transformation.
It is impossible to know how many of us around the world watched, through the various media, the scene of the opening of the Holy Door in St. Peter’s Basilica on 24 December. The beauty of the place and the prayerful atmosphere of the assembly must certainly have been contagious. But even more striking was the sight of Pope Francis, frail in his wheelchair, almost as a proclamation of our needy humanity, and immersing himself in an infinite ocean of hope.
