The Searcher's Path

A vocation with five houses

John the Baptist is the bridge who, from the banks of the First or Old Testament, brings about the fulfillment of the old promises to the new Promised Land, at the time of the New Testament. He is “the prophet of the Most High who will go before the Lord to prepare a way for Him (Lk 1:68.76.79). He proclaims himself “the Voice” (Mt 3:2), “the Friend of the Husband” (Jn 3:29). Jesus gives him the following praise: “Of all the children born to women, there has never been anyone greater than John the Baptist” (Mt 11:11; Lk 1:5-25 & 57-80; Mt 3:1-17).

But there is no doubt that it was written as an expression of human love. Without this deep bond of affection, even consecrated men and women are left with empty allegories and shallow spiritualities.

A Great Discovery Must Be Shared

All people seek a meaning for their lives. A life ‘with meaning’ is a life ‘with value,’ i.e., worth living. That’s exactly what Jesus came for: “I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.” This promise answers all our questions, doubts and anxieties. It also poses a great challenge: who would be able to keep it to himself, instead of sharing it with others?

A Word from the Deep Silence

Nowadays, St Joseph is almost invisible, even if he embodies all the traits required to inspire and maintain a vocation, and the values that are so much needed in our societies and personal lives. Not by chance, he was the favorite saint of St. Daniel Comboni, Africa’s great missionary. Rarely mentioned in the Gospels, his silence conveys a powerful message
