The last word of Jesus, “it is fulfilled,” is a proclamation of the fulfillment of the Father’s will: to free humanity from sin and death, and lead everybody to eternal life.
The third words from the cross: ‘Woman, here is your son’. Then he said to the disciple, ‘Here is your mother,’ bespeaks the mutual relationship between the Son and the Mother and its consequences for us: all human beings become children of a Mother who stands to protect and embrace all in her arms and heart.
“Father, forgive them; they do not know what they are doing.” The first of the ‘Seven Last Words of Jesus’ reminds us that forgiveness leads to spiritual transformation and love.
The cry of Jesus “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” was a cry of abandonment that led Him into a profound trust in the everlasting presence of the Father. Let us imitate Jesus when we feel abandoned.
Jesus offered the gift of paradise to one of the thieves crucified with Him, the one who asked Him to be remembered when He would be in his Kingdom. Through this, Jesus revealed once again how God is merciful and forgiving.
