Pope Francis has created the Catholic Diocese of Bentiu in South Sudan and appointed Comboni Bishop Christian Carlassare, (in photo, second from the left), as its first bishop. Currently, Bishop Carlassare is serving as the Local Ordinary of the Rumbek Diocese.
Through 17 months of conflict, tens of thousands of people have been killed in South Sudan and two million more displaced. Schools, health centers and markets have been looted and destroyed. It took a $1.8 billion humanitarian response last year for the country to avoid a famine. And it’s about to get even worse.
According to the BBC, the U.N. humanitarian coordinator in South Sudan, Toby Lanzer, says $1.3 billion are needed for emergency aid to address the severe and growing crisis in South Sudan.
As the conflict in South Sudan continues, aid agencies are struggling to provide assistance to the thousands of people caught up in the violence.
