Media is an effective messenger of truth and a powerful instrument of unity. Unfortunately, it could also be mishandled. Social media, in particular, has become a vehicle for anyone to reach more people internationally.
A few months back, a popular Facebook page with 20 million followers, Nas Daily, was accused by Al Jazeera as being biased towards Israel. Nas respectfully vented his frustrations online and said that his page was established not to push for political agenda, but to inspire people, help us discover our giftedness, and foster peace. He even said that the word “nas” means “people.”
Dr. Laurie Santos, who teaches The Science of Well-Being class at Yale University, pointed out that the youth of today face an unprecedented era where the misuse of social media often leads to social comparison that could damage their self-esteem.
How can social media be used effectively to obtain a genuine relationship with God amid doubts and fear, specifically during this pandemic? How can we encourage one another to practice generous acts, reflections of healing, and empowering each other against our common enemies of misinformation, hatred, violence, and corruption?
We need to use social media and mass media to promote the truth and the dignity of man. Instead of using demeaning words and pictures, we must help bring out the goodness of each person by affirming one another. For example, Patricia Non, who started the community pantry movement in the Philippines, inspired many to do their own acts of sharing. She simply wanted to share her goods and efforts with those in need. She also motivated others to concretely serve those lacking in food and other items for their survival.

Business Above Usual, Carl Balita and May Ceniza’s show on Teleradyo, teaches entrepreneurial skills and helps establish alternative sources of income.
Pope Francis, in Fratelli Tutti (205), exhorted, “In today’s globalized world, the media can help us to feel closer to one another, creating a sense of the unity of the human family which in turn can inspire solidarity and serious efforts to ensure a more dignified life for all….” As we follow this invitation of the Holy Father, we can truly mirror God’s redemptive and healing love to others.
