Mommy Issues

INTRODUCTION

There is no one like her. She is known for her unconditional love. Her children are closest to her. Mothers, for all that they have done, also need to be consistently appreciated, given their own space and alone time.

Biologically speaking, we are closest to our mothers because they literally carried us in their wombs for nine months. However, some mothers say that it is when they start taking care of the child after giving birth do they actually see the process of loving him unfold.

In my book “Inner Child Treasures,” I point out that there are studies showing that the baby in the mother’s womb absorbs the emotions of his mother. Thus, whether the mother already feels some form of attachment to the child or not, the challenging journey of giving nourishment and love already begins there.

Mothers in general have a special bond with their children. The first part of Isaiah 49:15 says, “Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child of her womb?” However, we know that there are circumstances where a mom is not prepared for her parental role and does not properly nurture the child, especially if he had been conceived out of rape, teenage pregnancy or as a form of escape from problems.

Mothers are not perfect human beings. They need our love and affirmation too – even our forgiveness. Let us strive to be grateful to them for all their sacrifices for us. After all, we would not be here on earth in this specific situation, if not for them. Mothers need their “love-yourself” times. Let us remind them to have moments of relaxation, meditation and engaging in their hobbies.

When our relationship with our moms can be quite overwhelming and we need some sacred space, the second part of Isaiah 49:15 assures us, “Even should she forget, I will never forget you.”

Whether we are grown-up or still somehow dependent on them, may we consider our moms as gifts from the Lord. Many times, their love closely mirrors the unconditional love of God for us. Thus, the expression, “a face only a mother could love.” We all have our quirks and weaknesses, but our mothers love us just the same and will often try to do all that they can to ascertain that we become empowered individuals.

A mother who loves the Lord and draws her children closer to Him is a real gem. Proverbs 31:28 and 30 remind us, “Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband, too, praises her: Charm is deceptive and beauty fleeting; the woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.”
